On December 26 2003, Bam was hit by a
deadly earthquake measuring 6.3 on the
Richter scale and was turned to rubble.
The earthquake killed more than 30,000
people, almost a quarter of the town’s
population.
Response
The HF global team co-ordinated by the
UK, USA and Germany immediately began
to raise funds and supplies around the
world while doing a local assessment of
the damage and degree of injuries sustained.
A medical response team was deployed
very quickly into the region to provide
treatment and aid.

The HF effort ensured that displaced
victims were able to get timely medical
treatment and basic supplies while the
local authorities carried out the cleanup
operation and built temporary shelter
for the survivors.
